Choosing a Nursery in Tottenham: What to Compare Before You Book a Place

When parents contact us asking about nurseries in Tottenham and what to look for, the questions are usually the same: Is it Ofsted rated? Do they take funded hours? What are the sessions like? And, perhaps most importantly, will my child actually be happy there? These are exactly the right things to ask, and this guide is an honest attempt to help you compare your options before you commit.

Start with Ofsted, but read past the headline grade

Ofsted ratings are a reasonable starting point, but a grade alone tells you less than the inspection report behind it. In Tottenham and the wider N17 area, a number of settings have been rated Good by Ofsted.

Bright Gems Nursery on Ashley Road (N17 9LN) holds a Good rating from its June 2023 inspection and is open 51 weeks of the year, Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. Rising Stars Nursery and Daycare on Church Lane (N17 7AA) has also been rated Good, with inspection activity in both November 2023 and April 2024. Pembury House Nursery School on Lansdowne Road (N17 9XE) is a local-authority nursery for children aged two to five and was rated Outstanding in its most recent full inspection, though that report dates from 2017.

Destiny Haven Nursery and Pre-school in Tottenham, based at St. Benet Fink Church Hall on Walpole Road (N17 6BH), holds a Good rating, with its most recent Ofsted inspection taking place in March 2024. The inspection noted that leaders and staff create a happy and safe environment, which reflects what I see here day to day. You can search any registered provider on the Ofsted reports register to read the full report rather than relying on a summary.

Ages and hours: check the detail, not just the headline

Not every nursery in the area covers the same age range or offers the same flexibility of sessions. Bright Gems and Rising Stars both cater for the early years age groups with standard weekday hours. Pembury House, as a maintained nursery school, typically runs term-time sessions aligned to the school calendar.

At Destiny Haven Nursery Tottenham, we care for children from three months to five years at our Walpole Road setting, with hours running Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, and an early start option from 7:30am. We also offer full day, half day, partial day, ad-hoc sessions, breakfast club, after-school and holiday club, which matters if your working pattern does not fit a standard nine-to-three model. It is worth asking any nursery you visit exactly which sessions they offer and whether those sessions can flex around your needs.

Funded hours: know what you are entitled to

All three and four year olds in Haringey are entitled to 15 hours of funded early education each week, regardless of parental work status or income. If you are a working family, you may be eligible for up to 30 hours per week, and since September 2025 that 30-hour entitlement has been extended to eligible working families with children from nine months old. Eligibility for the 30 hours depends on each parent meeting a minimum earnings threshold and neither parent earning over £100,000 adjusted net income individually. Check your exact eligibility at Childcare Choices.

We accept both 15 and 30 funded hours at Destiny Haven. If you want a full breakdown of how funding applies to our sessions, our fees and funding page has the detail, and our step-by-step guide to applying for 30 hours funding in Haringey walks through the process.

Curriculum and values: what sits behind the daily routine

Ofsted grades and session times are easy to compare on paper. What is harder to assess from a website is the ethos and curriculum approach behind the daily routine. It is worth asking any nursery how they support language development, what their SEND provision looks like, and how they communicate with parents day to day.

At Destiny Haven we are a values-led, Christian nursery founded in 2017. Our curriculum includes the EYFS framework, the LEEP programme, Wellcomm for language and communication, phonics, and SEND support alongside creative play. Parent partnership is something we take seriously rather than just mention on a brochure. I find that parents notice this fairly quickly when they come in for a look around.

Settling in: ask how it actually works in practice

What does the settling-in approach look like?

A nursery's settling-in process tells you a lot about how it treats both children and families. We follow a gentle, tailored settling-in programme at Destiny Haven, led by your child's key person, because we know the first few weeks matter enormously. Ask any nursery you visit whether settling-in visits are built into the process and who specifically will be looking after your child during that time.

Come in and see for yourself

Comparisons on paper will only take you so far. The atmosphere of a nursery, how the staff talk to the children, whether your child settles naturally into the room, these are things you can only judge in person. I would always encourage parents looking at nurseries in Tottenham to visit more than one setting before making a decision.

Several settings in the N17 area hold Good ratings from Ofsted, including Bright Gems Nursery on Ashley Road, Rising Stars Nursery and Daycare on Church Lane, and Destiny Haven Nursery and Pre-school on Walpole Road. Pembury House Nursery School on Lansdowne Road was rated Outstanding in its last full inspection. You can read each report in full on the Ofsted reports register.

Does Destiny Haven in Tottenham accept funded childcare hours?

Yes, we accept both the universal 15 hours for three and four year olds and the 30 hours for eligible working families. Since September 2025 the 30-hour entitlement also applies to children from nine months old for qualifying families. Visit our fees and funding page for details on how funding applies to our sessions.

What age groups does Destiny Haven Nursery Tottenham cater for?

Our Tottenham setting on Walpole Road, N17 6BH, cares for children from three months to five years. We are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, with an early start available from 7:30am. We also offer after-school and holiday club provision. If you want to see the setting, book a show-around and we will walk you through everything.

What should I ask when visiting a nursery in Tottenham?

Beyond Ofsted ratings, ask about the curriculum approach, how SEND needs are supported, what the settling-in process looks like, which funded hours they accept, and how they communicate with parents. Session flexibility is also worth checking if your working pattern is not a standard nine-to-five. Visiting in person is the best way to get honest answers to all of these.
