Preparing for the Summer Holidays with a Toddler: Honest Advice from a Nursery Manager

The summer holidays are nearly here, and every year around this time I have the same conversations with parents at our Noel Park and Tottenham settings. Toddlers thrive on routine during the nursery year, so when July arrives and that structure disappears, it can feel unsettling for little ones and exhausting for the adults around them. These are some of the things we talk through with families, and they are genuinely useful whether you are a first-time parent or heading into your second or third summer.

Keep some rhythm in the day

You do not need a timetable stuck to the fridge, but toddlers do better when the shape of the day feels familiar. We find that children who have no sense of routine at all during the holidays often come back to nursery in September struggling to settle again. Something as simple as keeping mealtimes consistent, having a rest period after lunch, and a wind-down routine before bed gives your child anchors in the day even when everything else is different.

It does not have to be rigid. The point is predictability, not perfection.

Get outside, even when the weather is not perfect

North London has a lot going for it in summer. Families across Haringey have access to some lovely green spaces, and getting out of the house even for an hour makes a real difference to a toddler's mood and sleep. Physical play outdoors burns energy in a way that indoor activity rarely does, and we see this clearly in the children at nursery. The ones who have had time outside arrive back after the holidays in a much steadier place.

Local parks, splash pads, and even a walk to the shops can be enough. Toddlers do not need expensive days out every week. They need movement, fresh air, and your company.

Plan for quiet time as well as activity

Parents sometimes feel pressure to fill every day with stimulation, but toddlers genuinely need downtime. In our nursery we build quieter moments into the day deliberately, because children at this age are processing an enormous amount. Too much activity without rest can lead to the kind of late-afternoon meltdowns that feel relentless by August.

Let your child play independently when they are willing to. Sit near them without directing everything. That kind of calm, unstructured time is not wasted; it is where a lot of imaginative thinking happens.

Simple activities that actually work

You do not need to buy much. Some of the most engaging toddler activities cost very little:

  • Water play in a washing-up bowl in the garden or on a balcony
  • Playdough made at home with flour, salt, and food colouring
  • Mark-making with chunky crayons and big sheets of paper
  • Baking simple things together, where the process matters more than the result
  • Treasure hunts around the house or garden with objects from around the home

These activities support language, fine motor skills, and concentration in ways that are completely in line with what we do every day at nursery. The EYFS statutory framework emphasises play as the foundation for early learning, and that does not stop when nursery breaks up for summer.

Think about the transition back to nursery

Something I always mention to families in July is to think a little bit about September now. If your child is moving rooms, starting at a new setting, or returning after a long break, the first few weeks back can take adjustment. Keeping some familiar nursery language alive during the holidays, talking positively about going back, and making sure your child has had enough sleep in the week before they return all help.

For families who are thinking about starting nursery for the first time, summer is actually a lovely time to book a show-around before places fill up. It means September feels far less sudden.

Funding over the summer

This comes up every year. If you receive funded childcare hours, it is worth checking with your provider how those hours work over the summer period. Some settings offer the option to stretch hours across more weeks at a lower amount per week, while others operate term-time only at the full weekly amount. If you are unsure what you are entitled to or whether you might qualify for funded hours, Childcare Choices is the clearest place to check. You can also find more information about sessions and funding on our fees and funding page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I keep my toddler's routine during the summer holidays without it feeling too strict?

You do not need a minute-by-minute plan. We find that anchoring the day around a few consistent things, like mealtimes, a rest after lunch, and a predictable bedtime routine, is usually enough. Toddlers are reassured by knowing what comes next, even when the activities themselves change from day to day.

My child struggles when routines change. Will they find it hard to settle back into nursery after the summer?

This is one of the most common things parents ask us in September. It is very normal. Talking positively about nursery during the holidays, keeping sleep consistent in the final week, and having a gentle settling-back plan with your child's key person all make a real difference. We tailor our approach to each child when they return.

Does Destiny Haven Nursery offer holiday club sessions during the summer?

Yes, we do offer Holiday Club sessions alongside our regular full day, half day, and ad-hoc session types. If you would like to find out more about what is available over the summer and how sessions are structured, you are welcome to [book a show-around](/book) or get in touch directly on 07717 666 788.

Can I use my funded childcare hours over the summer at Destiny Haven?

Funded hours can work differently depending on whether you take them term-time only or stretched across the year. We are happy to talk through how this works at our settings. For eligibility information, visit [Childcare Choices](https://www.childcarechoices.gov.uk), and you can also find more detail on our [fees and funding page](/fees).
