How to Apply for 30 Hours Funded Childcare in Haringey: A Tottenham Parent's Step-by-Step Guide

Every week at our Tottenham setting on Walpole Road, parents ask us about 30 hours funding Haringey how to apply. Some have heard about it from a friend and are not sure whether their child qualifies yet. Others have a code but are not certain what to do with it. I wanted to write this down properly, so that families across Tottenham, Bruce Grove, Noel Park and the surrounding area have a clear, honest guide to follow.

Let me walk you through it from the beginning.

What funded childcare is actually available

There are two separate entitlements, and it is worth understanding both before you apply.

Universal 15 hours: Every 3 and 4 year old in England is entitled to 15 hours of funded early education per week, for 38 weeks of the year. This is unconditional. It does not matter whether you work, what you earn, or how many hours you do. If your child is 3 or 4, this offer is available to them.

30 hours for eligible working families: Since September 2025, eligible working parents can access 30 hours of funded childcare per week from the term after their child turns 9 months old, right through to school age. This is not a phased or partial offer. It is the full 30 hours, for children from 9 months, provided your family meets the eligibility criteria.

To qualify, each parent (or the sole parent in a single-parent household) needs to be working, broadly equivalent to 16 hours a week at the National Living Wage. Neither parent can individually earn over £100,000 adjusted net income. Because the minimum earnings threshold shifts each April with the National Living Wage, I always recommend parents check their exact eligibility at Childcare Choices rather than relying on a fixed figure.

Step one: Apply through Childcare Choices

The application itself is done online via the government's Childcare Choices website, using your Government Gateway account. You can apply from when your child is 23 weeks old, which I always recommend doing early so there is no last-minute rush.

Once your application is approved, you will receive an 11-digit eligibility code. Keep hold of this. You will need to give it to us at nursery, along with your child's date of birth and your National Insurance number, so that we can verify and claim the funding on your behalf.

Step two: Know your Haringey term deadlines

This is where parents often get caught out, and it is genuinely important. Haringey Council publishes the term start dates and the deadlines by which you need to submit your code to your childcare provider. Here is how the current cycle works:

• If your child turns 9 months between 1 April and 31 August, funding can start from 1 September (autumn term). Your code needs to be with us by 15 August.
• If your child turns 9 months between 1 September and 31 December, funding starts 1 January (spring term), with a code deadline of 15 December.
• If your child turns 9 months between 1 January and 31 March, funding starts 1 April (summer term), with a code deadline of 15 March.

I always tell parents: do not wait until the deadline week. Give us your code as soon as you have it, and we can make sure everything is in order at our end.

Step three: Reconfirm every three months

This one catches families off guard more than anything else. Once you have your 30 hours code, you need to reconfirm your eligibility through your HMRC childcare account every three months. If you miss a reconfirmation window, your code can lapse and your funded hours may stop.

Haringey Council confirms this requirement, and it applies whether you hold a 30 hours code or Tax-Free Childcare, or both. Your HMRC account will tell you exactly when your next reconfirmation is due. Please do check it regularly rather than waiting for a reminder that may not arrive.

A note for foster carers in Haringey

If you are a foster carer, the process is different. From 1 September 2025, foster carers who meet the criteria can access an additional 15 hours on top of the universal 15 hours, giving a total of 30 hours. Crucially, this is managed by Haringey Council directly, not through HMRC. You will need to speak with your social worker rather than applying online. Codes still need to be renewed and resubmitted to your childcare provider every term.

Tax-Free Childcare: worth knowing about

If you are eligible for 30 hours, you can also apply for Tax-Free Childcare at the same time through Childcare Choices. This is a separate top-up scheme where, for every £8 you pay into your online childcare account, the government adds £2, up to £500 every three months per child. It can help cover any costs above your funded hours. Tax-Free Childcare and Universal Credit cannot be used together, so if you currently claim Universal Credit, check which option works better for your circumstances before switching.
