Overview
By the time children reach our Pre-School Room, they are turning into confident, chatty, opinionated people, and this room is built around that shift. Friendships start to matter properly at this age, ideas get more elaborate, and children want to do things for themselves rather than have things done for them. Our job is to give that independence somewhere real to go, whether that's through the mud kitchen, forest school sessions, or quiet time in the art studio working on something entirely their own idea.
A Typical Day
The curriculum here still has plenty of free, child-led play in it, but literacy, number, shape and pattern start to show up more deliberately, alongside phonics and language support through LEEP and Wellcomm for children who need that extra scaffolding with talking and listening. We use daily outdoor access properly rather than as an afterthought, because most three to five year olds think better on their feet than sat still, and a good chunk of school readiness is really about stamina, curiosity and being able to follow a few instructions in a row without losing the thread.
Care & Development
Meals are freshly cooked on site, which matters more than it sounds at this age, since children are increasingly aware of what's on their plate and keen to have opinions about it too. The 1:8 ratio gives staff room to actually sit with a small group and finish a conversation or a game, rather than constantly moving between children, which suits a room where negotiation, sharing and turn-taking are being worked out in real time.

Common questions
It's not about early workbooks or drilling letters. It's children being able to sit through a short group activity, follow two or three instructions in a row, manage their own coat and toileting, and ask for help when they need it. We build these skills gradually through the daily routine rather than treating them as a separate exercise.
We use Wellcomm and LEEP alongside everyday phonics work, which helps us notice early if a child needs extra support with talking or understanding language, not just wait for it to become obvious later. Group discussions, storytelling and the back-and-forth of pretend play in the room all feed into this too.
At three to five, emotions are often bigger than the vocabulary children have to explain them, so staff focus on naming what's happening and giving the child space to calm down rather than rushing them past it. With a 1:8 ratio, staff generally have the capacity to sit with one child through a wobble without the rest of the room losing supervision.
Simple things help most: letting your child try dressing themselves even when it's slower, talking through the day using open questions rather than yes or no ones, and reading together regularly. Weekly notes and termly reports on the Famly app usually point to what's being worked on so you can pick it up naturally at home.
We use tools like Wellcomm to help spot where a child might need more support, particularly with speech and language, and build that into their day rather than singling it out. Any concerns are raised with parents early and discussed together, so nothing comes as a surprise at a termly review.
You'll get weekly notes through the Famly app plus termly written reports, and regular consultations where staff talk you through what your child is doing well and what they're still working on. We see parents as the most important teacher a child has, so this is meant to be a genuine two-way conversation, not a one-off summary.
