What Is the EYFS Framework and What Does It Mean for Your Child?

What is the EYFS?

The Early Years Foundation Stage, or EYFS, is the statutory framework that sets out how nurseries, childminders and reception classes in England must support children's learning, development and welfare from birth to age five. Every registered early years setting has to follow it, which means whether you are looking at nurseries in Haringey or elsewhere in North London, the same framework applies.

But knowing it exists and understanding what it actually means for your child are two different things. Parents ask us about it regularly, and we always find the clearest way to explain it is simply this: the EYFS is not a rigid lesson plan. It is a set of principles and areas of learning that guide how we observe your child, plan for their next steps, and make sure they are thriving, not just happy.

The seven areas of learning

The EYFS organises children's development into seven areas. The first three are called the prime areas, and they are considered foundational because everything else builds on them:

• Communication and language — listening, understanding, and speaking
• Physical development — movement, coordination, and healthy habits
• Personal, social and emotional development — confidence, relationships, and managing feelings

Then there are four specific areas that become more prominent as children grow:

• Literacy — early reading and writing
• Mathematics — numbers, patterns, and shape
• Understanding the world — people, communities, and the natural world
• Expressive arts and design — creativity through art, music, movement, and imaginative play

At Destiny Haven, we do not treat these as separate boxes to tick. In a single morning of play, a child might be developing their communication, practising fine motor skills, and exploring early mathematical thinking all at once. That is how young children actually learn.

How we use the EYFS at Destiny Haven

The framework gives us a shared language and structure, but what brings it to life is the people using it. Here in our Haringey settings, each child has a key person who observes them regularly, gets to know their interests and strengths, and uses those observations to plan experiences that genuinely stretch and support them.

We also use additional programmes alongside the EYFS. Our curriculum includes the LEEP programme, Wellcomm for language and communication, Phonics, and structured SEND support. These sit alongside the EYFS rather than replacing it, and together they give us a fuller picture of where each child is and where they are heading.

Parent partnership is built into the EYFS too. You are not just receiving updates about your child. You are part of the picture. We share observations, we listen to what you notice at home, and we use that two-way understanding to support your child well.

The EYFS and school readiness

One thing parents often ask us is whether the EYFS is about getting children ready for school. In part, yes. The framework culminates in the EYFS Profile, which reception teachers complete at the end of a child's first year of school. But the journey through the EYFS is not about rushing children towards formal learning.

What we find, day to day, is that the children who settle most confidently into school are those who have had space to develop their curiosity, their independence, and their ability to communicate and connect with others. That is exactly what a well-delivered EYFS is designed to support.

Funded places and the EYFS

All nurseries and early years settings that accept government-funded hours must follow the EYFS. So if your child is accessing their 15 or 30 hours of funded childcare, you can expect the same framework to be in place wherever they go.

Since September 2025, eligible working parents can now access funded hours from as early as nine months old, so it is worth checking sooner than you might expect.

What to look for when visiting a nursery

When you visit a nursery, the EYFS gives you a useful lens. You can ask:

• How do you track each child's progress?
• How does the key person system work in practice?
• How do you involve parents in their child's learning journey?
• How do you support children with additional needs?

These are not awkward questions. Any nursery following the EYFS well will welcome them.
